My second visit to Herringbone, this time I was able to write a full blog post about it and tell you all about my experience. The first time around I went everything was absolutely perfect, and I knew they had changed the menu since then so I was excited to see what new delicious food they had added.
Something to mention about this place before we start talking about the food. The service here is always fantastic, we have actually had the same waitress both times we have visited now and both times she has been exceptional, along with the other staff who are around.
Okay onto the food, what we are all waiting for! We started with the whipped cod roe with potato crisps, (Sorry I didn’t get a photo of this one). The cod roe was delicious and creamy, the flavour wasn’t too strong or over powering and it paired perfectly with the crispy potato chips. To be honest I wish I had a bigger bowl of it so I could eat it with their absolutely amazing and delicious bread.
Next was one of my favourite dishes of the night, the fire roasted eggplant with tahini, fried pine nuts and roasted currants, which is served with crispy bread. The flavour packed into this delicious dish was incredible. It was everything you would want in an eggplant dish and more. Paired with the crispy salty bread this was easily one of the highlights of the night for me, which I know sounds weird that the eggplant was my favourite but I just really bloody enjoyed it! Another close favourite was the sashimi kingfish. This was a favourite of the others for the night, with fresh sashimi kingfish, candied walnuts, tahini yoghurt and tumac; once again they have nailed it with the flavours of this dish. There wasn’t one thing that I would want to change, and if anything I just wish I could have more of it. The time before I went they did this similar dish but with Trout, and it was one of my favourite dishes back then as well.
We then had two smaller dishes, (to prepare ourselves for the mains. I know what you’re thinking, there has already been SO much food, relax Andrea) The smoked pork and cotechino terrine and special of the night which was the smoked kingfish Gazpacho. Both dishes were fantastic and full of flavour, the smoked kingfish was cooked perfectly, (and very spicy & I didn’t get a good photo of this one either, sorry!). Onto the mains; which again, highlights of the night. I mean if anything every dish was a highlight but I can’t even begin to explain how amazing all of this food was.
The pan fried gnocchi, with roasted tomato sugo, basil pistou, kefalograviera and fried bread was absolutely perfect. Those little delicious pillows of gnocchi were some of the best I’ve ever had. With the flavours of the sauce and the cheese (which was a mix of sheep’s milk and goats milk) this made for a seriously mouth-watering dish. The addition of the crispy pieces of bread on top gave the differences of the soft pasta mixed with the crispy bread and honestly this dish is something I dream about. The final meal for the night was another main (no dessert tonight!) and it was the slow roasted lamb shoulder. This lamb shoulder was cooked exquisitely, it was basically melting away and you could literally cut it with a spoon (we did). The flavours packed into this dish were out of control and it was just the perfect hearty dish to finish the night.
There is honestly not one bad thing I can say about the food here, it has to be one of the best restaurants I’ve eaten at in Adelaide! I can't wait to hear about your visit.
